Barbara Trionfi is the former Executive Director at the Vienna-based International Press Institute (IPI), a global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists dedicated to safeguarding and fostering media freedom and promoting quality, independent journalism.
Her field of expertise covers different areas related to press freedom and freedom of expression, including self-regulatory media accountability systems, safety of journalists, and international mechanisms to protect press freedom. Barbara has taught courses at Webster University, Vienna in Media Ethics, Media Literacy and Cultural Diversity and the Media.
Barbara is currently an IPI Fellow. Between February and July 2023, Barbara joined The New Institute Centre for Environmental Humanities (NICHE) at Ca’ Foscari University, Venice, Italy as a visiting scholar to conduct a research into climate journalism.
She currently serves as a member of the International Board of Trustees of ARTICLE 19 and as a Board member of the World Expression Forum (WEXFO).
Barbara was awarded a Decoration of Merit in Gold by the Republic of Austria in 2022 for her efforts in defence of freedom of expression and safety of journalists. She is also the 2022 winner of the International Cultural Diversity Organization (ICDO) Excellence Award for her engagement in promoting diversity and inclusion.
