Series: Torture is the Neighbor
Claudia Smolansky is an independent journalist from Venezuela, dedicated to covering human rights violations, violence and migration. She has reported primarily about political prisoners, extrajudicial executions, victims of torture, enforced disappearances and killings of protesters. She is one of the authors of “Torture is the neighbor”, a three-piece article series that reveals the existence of clandestine tortures houses in Venezuela’s capital, Caracas. The piece was recognized with the Lorenzo Natali Media Prize by the European Commission and the National Award of Journalism by The Institute for Press and Society (Ipys). Claudia’s articles have appeared in different local media such as Armando.Info, El Nacional, El Estímulo, Runrun.es and Crónica.Uno with the support of different regional journalist networks such as CONNECTAS, Institute for War and Peace Reporting and Centro Latinoamericano de Investigación Periodística (CLIP).
Carmen Victoria Inojosa is a Venezuelan journalist that covers human rights violations, poverty, social and education conflicts in Venezuela. She is a professor of Journalism at the Central University of Venezuela and also a reporter for media outlets such as El Tiempo, Unión Radio, El Nacional and Crónica.Uno. In 2022 Carmen was a fellow at the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma, a project of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. She studied Journalism at the Central University of Venezuela. She won the Ipys Venezuela 2023 award, Lorenzo Natali Media Prize and the second place of the Massey Ferguson International Journalism Award 2017.
Marielba Núñez is an invetigative Venezuelan journalist, based in Caracas, focused in the coverage of science, environment, health and human rights. She has worked as reporter and editor in print and digital media, mainly in the venezuelan newspaper El Nacional, where she was chief of information of the investigative section Siete días. She has also collaborated with international media outlet, including Scientific American in Spanish and Scidev.Net, and with the venezuelan investigative journalism platform Armando.Info. She was selected as Knight-Wallace fellow at the University of Michigan in 2019-2020; as Early Childhood Global Reporting fellow at the Dart Center of Columbia University in 2021, and as recipient of the Global Health Security grant of the European Journalism Centre in 2022. She was part of the journalistic team awarded with the Eglantyne Jebb Prize, from Save the Children, in 2022. As part of a team of investigative reporters, she won the Lorenzo Natali Media Prize, from the European Comission, in 2023.
