When Suffering Has a Child's Face: Unaccompanied Minor Refugees Slipping Through the Cracks

Two years ago, a 15-year-old Sudanese girl arrived in Egypt as an unaccompanied refugee. Her mother compelled her to flee her homeland because of a serious threat to her life there. The girl was raped in Cairo by a Sudanese national, and her life spiralled downward from there. Suffering is visible on her face, giving her a distinct personality and reflecting the awful torment she has endured her whole life. The apparent suffering on her face reflects abuse, dread, deprivation, worry, and deep estrangement in a harsh present that does not portend a compassionate future. Read more
