Gabriel Baglo is Journalist, Expert, Trainer & Consultant in Media Development and Communication. He is also Advocate for Press Freedom, Freedom of Expression, the Safety of Journalists, and Access to Information.
Gabriel Baglo was Director of the International Federation of Journalists for Africa (2003-2017). He actively participated in the structuring of the media sector in Africa, and widely the strengthening and development of unions and associations of journalists. He has actively engaged on issues affecting press freedom, access to information, safety of journalists, and media development in the continent and at the level of the African Union.
Gabriel Baglo worked in the public broadcast media, and in the independent print media as reporter, as editor; and was Secretary General of Togo Union of Journalists (1997-2000). He joined the IFJ in 2000 as West Africa Coordinator of the Media for Democracy Programme supported by the European Union (2000-2003), and became IFJ Africa Director in 2003.
Gabriel Baglo has been Board Member of many Organisations and Campaigns; including the African Platform on Access to Information (APAI) leading to the adoption of the International Day on Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) in 2015 by UNESCO, and by the UN General Assembly in 2019.
He partook in the consultations for the adoption of the Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression in Africa in 2002; and was part of the Team that led the 2019 review into: The Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression and Access to Information in Africa.
Gabriel Baglo is Senior Moderator for The Africa Media Barometer (AMB) to assess Freedom of Expression and Press Freedom in African countries. He is Trainer and Facilitator for workshops on Specialised Journalism, Access to Information (ATI), and Communication Strategies for Social Change and Development.
