FJA Focus Newsletter: All set for Earth Day Gala Celebrations in Cyprus!

The 7th Fetisov Journalism Awards will be held in Limassol on 22 April, on Earth Day, a moment to appreciate the wonders of the planet in which we live and at the same time to pay tribute to the world’s best journalism.

Joining us this year will be distinguished guests from Cyprus as well as global and regional media leaders.

The awards take place alongside the annual meeting of FJA Experts and Jury members which starts on the morning of 22 April and concludes in the mid-afternoon. You’ll get the details on arrival at the hotel.

We have a full agenda, reviewing FJA work and discussing some fresh project proposals for the future.

The theme of this year’s Awards is Stories for a Better World, highlighting how journalism brings progress and change. We’ll want to focus this year on that aspect of the work of our winners.

During our Experts Meeting we will also discuss some new projects and explore plans for co-operation with other media support groups. We have some special guests to help us focus on aspects of this discussion, including

Shada Islam, Brussels-based Journalist and Global Affairs Analyst;

Maja Sever, President, European Federation of Journalists

Cherilyn Ireton, Director of the World Editors Forum, and

Aralynne McMane, President and Director of Global Youth and News Media

Your suggestions on how to expand the work of the FJA or how we develop new partnerships, both in the industry and in the regions of the world, will be welcome. This is an open free-flowing discussion, so we want to hear from you.

Part of the debate will be on how to expand our activities. We have had successful webinars this year, for example, the January event Women in the Firing Line, when we discussed the problem of gender hate in journalism.

What are the themes we should take up this year – AI, legal threats to journalists? – or should we focus on raising awareness on ethics and standards and how we reach out to the rapidly-expanding community of influencer/journalists, and how do we involve more young people?

There’s much to discuss – looking forward to seeing you there!
